California is churning out new bands at a remarkable rate these days, and Blackwood Royalty are another band that are worth your time.

Formed in late 2009 and containing several veterans of the Bay Area music scene, Blackwood Royalty have put together seven tracks that draw on the melodic appeal of folk and the intensity of hard rock.

The four-piece cite 60’s British Invasion groups as influences for this project, something which is typified by the ringing guitars, lyrical hooks and catchy melodies that can be heard throughout their debut.

‘Tomorrow (Molly)’ speeds along at a comfortable pace. Containing a steady melodic riff that is complemented by a thudding bass line and driving beats, is rounded off nicely by Steve-O’s clear and passionate vocals. This is a strong, yet chilled out opener.

‘Sunshine On Your Shit’ is the juxtaposition of laid back intensity. On the one hand you have the fierce and powerful vocals of Steve-O, and on the other, a melodic trio that are chugging along at their own pace, which is briefly interrupted by Ben Davis’  blistering guitar solo.

Meanwhile, ‘Stars That Burn’ ventures into alternative rock and Britpop. With thought provoking lyrics and garage rock tinged licks, it is a glorious two and half minute slice of melodic rock.

The Morrissey Magnet (another Britpop reference, which is arguable whether it was meant in that way) is a record to save for a summer nights drive along quiet country roads, or failing that, a chilled out weekend at the beach.

Just like California’s home-grown scene in general, there is a lot of potential here.
